Hwang InYoup, who shot to fame in the hit drama “True Beauty” as Han SeoJun, held his first fanmeeting in Singapore at Capitol Theatre.
With fans chanting his name, Hwang InYoup started off the event singing ‘It Starts Today’, the OST from “True Beauty”.
Despite it being his first time here in Singapore, he found it a beautiful country.
Quiz with Hwang InYoup
Kicking off with the 1st segment, it was quiz time. He was eager to meet his fans and told them how much fun they would have would depend on their interactions and cheers.
The actor also revealed that the day before the event, he had tried Chili Crab, a must-have to eat in Singapore, and asked fans what he should eat after the fanmeeting. Fans suggested local food such as chicken rice, roti prata, and satay.
As Singapore’s birthday is round the corner, the next segment tested him about Singapore. If he got 4 of them right, he would be presented with a treat. If he got 5 of them right, he would be able to give 5 lucky fans a polaroid of himself.
Among the questions, one was about the lower part of the Merlion. Hwang InYoup revealed that he had seen the Merlion statue the previous day when he took a walk along the river, so he had no problems answering this question correctly.
With all 5 questions answered correctly, the MC decided to add in a bonus question.
This time, he was asked which color did not represent any of the SMRT lines. Since the actor hasn’t had the chance to ride the train in Singapore, he had no idea about this. The MC told him that it was a color near to his yellow top, to which he thought that the answer was orange. With the help of fans, he managed to get this answer correct—hot pink.
For having all 6 questions correct, the treat—kaya toast and teh tarik—were pushed onto the stage. Taking a bite of the kaya toast, he found it very delicious. Thereafter, the MC told him instead of saying 맛있어요 (delicious) in Singapore, we say ‘shiok’, and the actor repeated after, with the kaya toast still in his hands. He also managed to finish the piece of kaya toast. Next, he tried the teh tarik and found that it matches well with kaya toast.
Polaroid for lucky fans
Hwang InYoup had the chance to give 5 lucky fans a polaroid of him. As they drew the lucky fans, their seat numbers were shown on screen.
Q&A Corner
In the next segment, the actor had to answer questions that fans had written on a post-it note. He was given two props for this segment—a book of answers & a cat-eared lie detector. He commented that the latter seemed scary.
To start off, the MC asked Hwang InYoup to pick the first question, but the actor asked the MC to pick instead. One fan wrote if he could reenact his favorite scene among his dramas. Hwang InYoup revealed that the kiss scene from “Why Her?” was his favorite scene. Curious about what the fans like, he asked them about their favorite scene. Fans screamed that they wanted to see his iconic ‘Okey Dokey’ scene from “True Beauty” and cheered for him to do so. He told them that he would do it afterward.
He also had a staring contest with a lucky fan and had everyone sing a birthday song for another fan with an upcoming birthday.
Next, he put the cat-eared lie detector on and picked a post-it from a fan that wanted Hwang InYoup to be her boyfriend. When one fan in the venue screamed that she would cook and clean every day, the MC asked the actor if he would accept her proposal. He then turned to the ‘Book of Answers’ for help and eventually expressed that he would be everyone’s boyfriend.
When asked to give advice, Hwang InYoup answered that the fans should dance to ‘Okey Dokey’ when they are feeling down. Then, with the lie detector on his head, he did 5 different sets of hearts.
As the first part of the fanmeeting came to an end, a video of Hwang InYoup played on screen.
Dressed in another top, Hwang InYoup, who wanted to get closer to fans, walked past the fans on the first floor before returning to the stage. He was also apologetic that he could not get closer to the fans on the second floor.
Hwang InYoup Filmogram
The second part of the fanmeeting kicked off with his filmogram.
For “Tale of NokDu” (2019) as Park DanHo:
To obtain sharp features to match the cold-hearted killer character, the actor had to diet and lose weight.
For “18 Again” (2020) as Goo JaSung:
In this drama, he played a rebellious and feisty high school basketball captain that had a painful memory with his parents. Despite the bad experience, Goo JaSung is warm inside.
When asked about his similarity with Goo JaSung, he answered that they looked alike. However, he isn’t that feisty like the character.
Hwang InYoup also revealed that he can sometimes be calm but active and energetic with close friends. And today, he is so because he is with his fans. Even though it is a little embarrassing to confess to someone in public in Korean culture, he would personally do it if his loved one wanted him to do so.
For “True Beauty” (2020) as Han SeoJun:
Adapted from a webtoon, the character Han SeoJun was already popular. Hwang InYoup also felt very attached to Han SeoJun. Seeing how loudly fans were cheering for this character, he could feel that Han SeoJun was also massively popular in Singapore.
In “True Beauty”, Han SeoJun had a one-sided love with Im JooKyung, the main protagonist of the drama. Despite the difficulties, Han SeoJun still pursued her, which Hwang InYoup found admirable and cool. He also stated that Han SeoJun was the best-looking—not him.
The actor also received many praises from the MC, who found him considerate, polite, and a cool and super nice guy.
To fulfill the promise made to his fans, even though he found it hard to immerse into it just like Han SeoJun, he tried his best dancing to ‘Okey Dokey’. Being the first overseas stop for his Asia fanmeeting, Singapore fans were lucky to watch him dance to this song.
After that, the MC then asked fans to dance to ‘Okey Dokey’ for him as a Singapore exclusive. Hwang InYoup told the fans that he won’t be able to forget this and would think about the Okey Dokey song when he thinks of Singapore.
For “Sound of Magic” (2022) as Na IlDeung:
Hwang InYoup really wanted to show how different Na IlDeung is, as this character is the complete opposite of Goo JaSung or Han SeoJun.
There was one thing that Na IlDeung said in the drama, “You don’t necessarily need to have a dream,” which Hwang InYoup thinks can be applied to everyone.
He also revealed a habit of his—his lips will clasp when he tries to hold back his laughter.
“Why Her?” (2022) as Gong Chan
For this drama, Hwang InYoup still remembered the first shoot. Gong Chan was facing co-actress Oh SooJae, played by Seo HyunJin, a senior that he respected.
He asked fans if they understood what he had said and was surprised when they said they did.
Seo HyunJin found it hard to slap him, but they wanted to make the slap scene as quick as possible, so they had to choreograph it. It took them around 3 takes to complete it.
The most memorable scene for him was the part where he wrapped the scarf around the lead actress’ cuffed hands.
He also stated that he would see the comments fans made and gather them. With every drama he was part of, he would put in his very best. He disclosed that his next role would be a secret.
Hwang InYoup Game
How could there not be games during a fanmeeting, right? The next game segment allowed lucky fans to go on stage to play 3 different games with the actor to win a polaroid with him.
1. Ddakji
The first game was Ddakji—a traditional Korean game played with folded paper tiles.
If the lucky fan was able to flip his ddakji, they would win. Being a gentleman, he let them take their turn first. Before starting, he even taught the fan how to play the game, to which the MC revealed to the fans that the actor was actually good at it.
Hwang InYoup suggested a handicap for himself, so he used his left hand but ended up flipping the ddakji. However, he appealed for another chance for the fan.
2. Hand balance game
The second game was a game to push the other’s hands and make them lose balance.
As a handicap for this game, the actor stood on one leg. He found the fan, whose hands were trembling and who couldn’t look him in the eye, cute.
3. Staring contest
Beyond expectation, a young fan was up next. They both sat on the chair, and the MC asked her how they felt. Hwang InYoup also told them to, “Look at me,” inciting screams from the fans. Due to their young age, he politely sought approval from her parents before hugging them. What a gentleman!
For the last segment, a lucky fan would stand a chance to win a handmade traditional fan, where he wrote: ‘황인엽 ♡‘ (his name in Korean), and kept the right side blank so that he could fill in the fan’s name later on. At the back of the fan, he also signed an autograph with a heart.
Feeling bad that he was unable to meet his fans on the second floor earlier on, he had actually wanted to pick a fan to win this prize. However, a lucky fan from the first floor went on stage and had him write her name on the fan. How lucky!
As the fanmeeting slowly came to an end, Hwang InYoup shared that he was happy and felt it was an honor to come to Singapore.
“Thank you for coming even though you’re busy. If I have the chance, I would come back to Singapore and see you guys. Thank you for giving me so much love. I love you.”
He took a photo with all the fans as they held a banner for him, which was a special event for him. Before ending the event, he also requested for everyone to clap for the translator and MC.
The actor hoped that the event was meaningful and told fans that as long as they continued to give him their support, he would be back.
Ending off with ‘I Mean It’, an OST from “The Sound of Magic”, he was also shocked when the confetti suddenly popped while he was singing the song.
Once again, he thanked his fans for coming and bid goodbye to them on each side.
