Kang TaeOh has become everyone’s K-Drama actor crush with his portrayal of the adorable and sweet Lee JunHo in the hit series “Extraordinary Attorney Woo“. The massive success of the series has shed a much-needed spotlight on the talented actor who has been slowly gaining recognition for his acting skills and his charms. However, this is not the first series in which the actor has played a role that has made us fall in love with him. His versatility as an actor is prominent in the various genre he has acted in the span of his career. From historical dramas to romantic comedies, either as a lead or a supporting role, actor Kang TaeOh has always left a memorable impression in the minds of viewers and gained nods of appreciation and respect for his brilliant portrayal of his characters.
New to him? Here are 3 of his K-Dramas that spotlight his amazing acting skills and would make you fall further in love with him.
We loved him, we rooted for him, we hated him at some point, and we also understood him. Starring alongside Kim SoHyun and Jang DongYoon, “The Tale Of NokDu” tells the story of a young man who disguises himself as a woman in other to enter the widow’s village and find out why assassins were sent to kill him and his father. A quest that uncovered a lot of revelations, his journey is far from rosy as he is faced with the complications of hiding his true identity, falling in love, and finding the real truth about his birth and destiny.
This drama showed off Kang TaeOh’s versatility like no other. He embodies the character of the Cha YoolMoo, a handsome man who wins over the hearts of the women in the Widow village with his smartness, fighting skills, and cooking skills as well. His character is more complex than being the winsome heartthrob. He is an ambitious man who is clouded with the quest for power and although he might be kind and thoughtful in many areas, he wasn’t afraid to harm anyone who tried to prevent him from achieving his goal. His amazing chemistry with both main leads is however one of the key highlights of the series. As an actor, he is able to convey the emotions and personality of his character in an amazing way that even while he made us grind our teeth in anger sometimes, we still understood him (and subtly rooted for him too).
Starring ZE:A’s Yim SiWan, Shin SaeKyeong“, and Girls’ Generation’s SooYoung, “Run On” tells the complicated love story of a track athlete and a movie translator. From different classes and worlds, as their worlds collide, they try to find a balance amidst the troubling complications and pressures that arise from family, public perception and work. In contrast to his character in “The Tale Of NokDu”, we had no conflicting emotions with his character in this series. With various scene-stealer moments, his character was simply one that we adored. He plays the role of Lee YoungHwa, an art student whose work piques the interest of the main lead, Seo DanAh (played by Girls’ Generation’s SooYoung), and also formed a romantic connection between them.
Lee YoungHwa is seen as a handsome, responsible, funny, and dutiful character who goes out of his way to help people. He plays a vital role in ensuring the main leads of the series come together while also dealing with his own feelings for an art buyer and CEO of a Sports Agency. In this series, while his character is mostly portrayed as the bright and cheerful artist who is the positive anchor of the story, we also see scenes where he shows off his complexities too. He is human and has a flurry of emotions, especially when it comes to love and relationships.
Perhaps one of the characters we thoroughly enjoyed in both seasons of this campus romance drama, Kang TaeOh’s as Choe Hun is perhaps one of his funniest to date. The drama tells of the encounter between 5 friends, four of which end up leaving in the same house together. Yun TaeOh (played by Ji Soo) seeking a sense of independence moves out of his family’s house and decides to leave alone in one of their buildings. His plans go awry as his friends, due to one complication or another decide to come to stay with him. From his first (but secret) love, Han Song (played by DIA’s Jung ChaeYeon) whose house has been seized due to her parent’s debt to Choe Hun (played by Kang TaeOh) who was chased out of his house by his father because he wanted to become a musician/actor, and O GaRin (played by Choi Ri) an heiress seeking a sense of freedom from the pressures of her family and role.
Kang TaeOh’s portrayal of Choe Hun was comedy at its best. He made this already funny series even more enjoyable to watch with his various hilarious antics. Furthermore, his characters banter with O GaRin was simply priceless as they are one of the most chaotic and funniest K-Drama couples to date.
